Abu Hasan, a former Bedouin and a merchant, prepares to take a second wife. At the wedding celebration, he passes gas loudly and, humiliated, excuses himself from the room and runs away to India. Ten years later, he feels homesick and returns, only to overhear a woman saying to her child, "Thou wast born, O my daughter, on the very night when Abu Hasan farted”.
Abu Hasan promptly returns to India.
